TOU-Smart^TM is a simple solution from Iris Connection, Inc. for those who want to control their pumping costs by using electricity during off-peak hours. The more off-peak electricity you use, the more you save.

We have all become accustomed to making money-saving choices and paying lower prices for goods and services used during off-peak times. A number of industries - such as telecommunications and commercial airlines - offer attractive off-peak rates to even out customer demand and prevent system overload.

The Time-Of-Use (TOU) electric rate is based on the same concept. By reducing your electric use during peak periods, you have the opportunity to lower your annual energy costs - without reducing the overall amount of electricity you use.

Are TOU rates right for you?

They may be just the right choice. Time of Use pricing is higher when the demand for energy is the highest. Typical peak hours of highest demand are midday during the week. During low demand hours - overnight and on weekends - system prices are lower - and so are Time of Use rates during this time period.

 If you can control the time of day that you consume energy, TOU rates will help you save money. Think about when you have the highest demand, If you could "shift" the load to the low-rate time periods what would the saving add up to?

How does it work?

The TOU-Smart^TM program allows the operator to set the run times of the pump or pumps based upon the time of day, day of week and even have options for holidays and weekends. For example, the primary pump can be set to fill the storage tank right up to the maximum fill limit just before the peak period begins. It will then not allow the pump to run, unless the level calls for a start, until non-peak hours. It will do it all automatically once TOUsmart^TM has been set up by the operator. Another feature allows the operator to set up a second "mode" for weekends and holidays, where the start/stop times can be adjusted to reflect the off-peak rate.

It's simple to use

Using the TOU-Smart^TM module of the Watchman System^TM Control Panel the system operator can remotely set up the Primary mode to allow the pumps to run only on the specified times. Consequently, TOU-Smart^TM will first check the day and time of day before staring to fill the storage tank or respond to a demand request. A second level can be set that will start the pump regardless of the time of day for emergency filling and/or extremely high demand. Another feature is "Mode 2." Power is supplied at off-peak rates on weekends and holidays, normally the highest demand period of the water system, so having a second mode to allow for more flexible run times takes advantage of the off-peak rates.
